Ukraine has begun using a modified version of the An-28 as an aerial platform to intercept Shahed drones, betting on a creative and low-cost solution.

The aircraft has been equipped with interceptor drones launched in flight, such as the P1-Sun and the Merops AS-3 Surveyor, allowing it to engage targets while still airborne. The initiative, revealed by pilot Tymur Fatkullin, has already demonstrated positive results under real combat conditions.

Images show the turboprop fitted with mounts under the wings capable of carrying different types of interceptors. In addition, the aircraft retains armament such as the M134 Minigun, increasing its offensive capability. According to Fatkullin, the P1-Sun works as an “affordable air-to-air missile,” offering a more economical alternative compared to traditional air defense systems.

The main objective of this strategy is to reduce the costs of the war against drones. Shahed drones, used by Russia in mass attacks, are relatively inexpensive, while defense missiles are far more costly. By using cheaper interceptors launched from patrolling aircraft, Ukraine aims to balance this equation and make its defense more sustainable.

The adaptation of the An-28 illustrates Ukraine’s approach of rapid innovation amid the conflict. Rather than waiting for specialized equipment, the country has modified existing platforms and tested solutions directly on the battlefield. This model, based on experimentation and continuous adjustments, has driven significant advances in the use of drones and counter-drone systems since the beginning of the war.
